Do I need an account?

No. Nothing here asks for one, and the free tools never will.

Is there a file size limit?

Around 150 MB comfortably. Past that it depends on your own device memory, because there is no server to throttle you.

Why can’t I password-protect a PDF yet?

Encryption is the one job the browser PDF libraries cannot do properly. Shipping a lock that looks real but is not would be worse than not shipping it. It is coming, done correctly.

How is this free?

These tools run on your machine, so they cost us nothing to run. That is why they stay free permanently rather than until we change our minds.
